SIR Honorary Life Member Les Jones was our 1991 Big Sir.

Born in Sacramento, he attended local area schools.  He played minor league baseball as an outfielder in the Sacramento Valley Baseball League.  He was on a baseball scholarship to Yuba City Junior College when the WWII broke out. Sergeant Jones of the US Marines had the opportunity to see “beautiful downtown Guadalcanal” from inside a foxhole .....looking upwards. Just before the war ended he was selected to attend Navy Pre-Flight school. Upon discharge Les returned home and began working for Pacific Bell as a “pole-climbing” lineman.  At Chico he became Construction Foreman. A few years later he put on a white shirt and tie and moved to the company’s  San Francisco Real Estate Division office.  Here he learned to buy, sell and rent various telephone building sites. His next transfer was from the Bay Area to Sacramento where he finished 41 years of Pac Bell service as  Real Estate Supervisor.

Les retired in 1982 and soon joined SIR #67.  When Branch #102 was formed (from #67,) he became a Charter Member.  Early on, he served in many Branch capacities. . . one as Golf Tournament Chairman. He was Big Sir in 1991 and one year later  elected SIR Area Governor. Our sympathies go out to his wife Irene and their son Richard at this time.  He will be missed.
